Today, Drax Group launched a new sustainability framework that sets out how all of Drax Group – including Elimini – is taking action to help decarbonize society, to protect and enhance nature, and to support the people who work with and alongside us.
For us at Elimini, sustainability boils down to constant, consistent action – in consultation with experts and communities – to deliver projects that remove carbon for good. At Elimini’s launch, we shared our intent to work with experts from across academia, the environmental community, and the BECCS value chain to build a comprehensive sustainability approach – setting clear goals and targets – that meet our ambition to be the world’s leading carbon removals company.
Today, we’re reaffirming our commitment to deliver our own sustainability approach for Elimini, developed hand-in-hand with a coalition of our key stakeholders. This will mean, at a minimum:
- Ensuring our sustainability approach and strategy pursues positive outcomes for people, the climate and nature
- Setting clear sustainability targets with regular monitoring, reporting and independent verification of our progress
- Setting clear governance standards for the development and deployment of carbon removal projects
- Defining and using only sustainably sourced biomass for our BECCS projects
- Utilizing independently verified methodologies for assessing the climate impact of our carbon removal projects – such as the one developed by Drax and BECCS developer Stockholm Exergi
- Engaging and partnering with stakeholders and our communities, particularly indigenous and underserved communities, as we plan and build our BECCS facilities
- Managing for water, soil, air, noise and other ecosystem values through our value chain
- Defining how BECCS can best contribute to the circular economy
In the meantime, the Drax framework announced today will serve as a strong foundation to guide Elimini’s operations and underpin our collaborative efforts.
Exploring Drax’s new sustainability framework
So, what’s actually in the new Drax Group sustainability framework – and how will it help us achieve our purpose to remove carbon for good?
The framework speaks directly to a number of issues that have been raised about Drax’s operating model and provides a pathway to deliver improvements that benefit nature, the climate and people. The framework contains 26 measurable, achievable, and time-bound targets, grouped into three pillars:
- Climate positive: Reaching Net Zero by 2040 across our value chain.
- Nature positive: Supporting biodiversity across our sites and in our value chain by the end of 2030.
- People positive: Making a positive contribution to the lives and livelihoods of our colleagues, communities, and workers in our supply chain by 2030.
As part of the framework, Drax Group, including Elimini, has outlined its intent to achieve all its near-term 2030 SBTi targets covering Scopes 1, 2, and 3. It also aims to further achieve its Net Zero target by 2040, which is in active review with SBTi at present.
This new approach will ensure we can continue to support energy security by generating clean power and meeting global climate targets.
