Sustainability.

Setting a global standard.

The world needs carbon removals.  But removing carbon for good means going beyond delivering BECCS rapidly, and at world-changing scale.

It means delivering BECCS in a way that protects the one planet we all share.

At Elimini, we’re on a mission to set the global standard for BECCS governance and transparency. To build a comprehensive sustainability framework - and set of targets and policies - that meet our ambition to be the world’s leading carbon removals company.

Building a coalition.

We’re convening a group of experts from across academia, the environmental community and the BECCS value chain to co-create a shared vision of what's involved in the sustainable deployment of this technology.

Steps to sustainability.

As a minimum, sustainable deployment will mean:

Creating and publishing a sustainability framework and strategy that pursues positive outcomes for people, the climate and nature.

Setting clear sustainability targets with regular monitoring, reporting and independent verification of our progress.

Setting clear governance standards for the development and deployment of BECCS projects.

Defining and using only sustainably sourced biomass for our BECCS projects.

Certifying our BECCS credits to meet high integrity carbon dioxide removal (CDR) standards.

Utilizing Lifecycle Assessments to measure the carbon impact of our BECCS projects.

Utilising independently verified methodologies for assessing the climate impact of our BECCS projects.

Engaging and partnering with stakeholders and our communities, in particular indigenous and underserved communities, as we plan and build our BECCS facilities.

Managing for water, soil, air, noise and other ecosystem values through our value chain.

Defining how BECCS can best contribute to the circular economy, for example by never using BECCS for enhanced oil recovery or for other mineral extraction purposes.

Read more about how we will measure the climate impact of our BECCS projects through our independently verified methodology, developed by our founding company Drax and BECCS developer Stockholm Exergi.

The methodology outlines several biomass sourcing sustainability criteria, including the protection of high carbon stock lands and a commitment to not using primary forests in biomass sourcing for projects in the US, UK, or EU.
