IPCC

As above, the latest climate model scenarios show that all pathways that keep temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C (with little or no overshoot) require carbon removal. The amount ultimately needed will depend on how quickly we can reduce emissions in the near term and whether — or by how much — we overshoot climate targets. Estimates, including both natural and technological carbon removal approaches, range from 5 to 16 billion metric tons per year globally by 2050.

The State of Carbon Dioxide Removal report estimates that the current scale of carbon removal accounts for only 2 Gt of CO2 per year (global emissions of carbon dioxide lay at 36.8 Gt in 2022). Out of this amount, less than 0.01% is durable carbon removal (i.e., where the carbon is not re-emitted into the atmosphere), highlighting the urgent need to scale up durable carbon removal by over 5,000 times to reach the required 10 Gt by 2050.

Summary for policymakers Page 17: All pathways that limit global warming to 1.5°C with limited or no overshoot project the use of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) on the order of 100–1000 GtCO2 over the 21st century. CDR would be used to compensate for residual emissions and, in most cases, achieve net negative emissions to return global warming to 1.5°C following a peak (high confidence). CDR deployment of several hundreds of GtCO2 is subject to multiple feasibility and sustainability constraints (high confidence). Significant near-term emissions reductions and measures to lower energy and land demand can limit CDR deployment to a few hundred GtCO2 without reliance on bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) (high confidence). {2.3, 2.4, 3.6.2, 4.3, 5.4}

The relevance of this temperature threshold was explored even more in the 2018 IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C. In that report, and further supported by subsequent IPCC reports and other scientific literature, they found that limiting global warming to 1.5°C will reduce the impacts on human systems and terrestrial, freshwater and coastal ecosystems. It made clear that every increment of global warming above 1.5°C matters for the scope and magnitude of these impacts.
